News: Journalists beaten in Sulutepe

ADA-UK strongly condemns today's attack and violence against journalists in Sulutepe, Azerbaijan. Idrak Abbasov, the 2012 Index on Censorship Press Freedom Award winner, was brutally beaten by paramilitary security forces of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), as he was reporting from the site of ongoing SOCAR-led demolitions of private residencies in Sulutepe. This incident highlights continued violation of media freedoms and demonstrates that independent journalists in Azerbaijan face growing threats. ADA-UK joins Azerbaijani democrats and human rights groups in calling for immediate and transparent investigation of this crime and an end to violence against journalists.

ADA-UK warmly congratulates Azerbaijan Public Chamber, civil society and human rights campaigners, and youth activists with the successful demonstration in Baku. Coming in the wake of a 7 year long ban on public assembly, yesterday's demonstration was a celebration as much as a political rally. British-Azerbaijanis stand united with our fellow democrats in Baku and join their demands for immediate release of all political prisoners, end to corruption and a peaceful and just solution to the Karabakh conflict.

News: Azerbaijan Early Day Motion in UK Parliament

A parliamentary petition, known as Early Day Motion (EDM) has been presented in the House of Commons, following ADA-UK meeting with Paul Flynn MP and Emin Milli. EDM 2861 calls for promotion of a peaceful and just resolution of the NagornoKarabakh conflict, fulfilment of UN Security Council resolutions, release of political prisoners and respect for human rights in Azerbaijan. ADA-UK is appealing to British parliamentarians to support the EDM and urges British-Azerbaijanis to write to their MPs calling upon them to sign EDM 2861.

Report: “Azerbaijan: 20 Years of Independence and the Struggle for Democracy”

Late on Thursday evening, 20 October 2011, a discussion hosted by the Henry Jackson Society took place at the House of Commons in Westminster, bringing together journalists, human rights defenders, civil and political activists to offer an analysis of the challenges faced by Azerbaijan as a youthful democracy 20 years after its independence from the Soviet Union.
“Azerbaijan: 20 Years of Independence and the Struggle for Democracy”, was chaired by Paul Flynn MP, whilst the panel of speakers was composed of notable figures such as the Deputy Programme Director at Amnesty International, John Dalhuisen, Head of Advocacy at Index on Censorship, Michael Harris and leading Azerbaijani – British political activist and Acting Director of Azerbaijan Democratic Association, Murad Gassanly.
